Finding the right e-liquid is really important to make sure you get the best possible vaping experience. In this post we will be giving some pointers on how to identify the right e-liquid to suit both you and your device.
Choosing the right ratio
E-liquids are available in different ratios of vegetable glycerine (VG) and propylene glycol (PG), which are designed for use in different types of devices.
50/50 or high PG e-liquids have a thin consistency that makes them ideal for use with starter kits and pod systems. These types of devices usually have small coils which need the thin consistency of a 50/50 or high PG e-liquid to keep the coil saturated.
On the other hand, high VG e-liquids have a thicker, more syrupy consistency which is more suited to sub-ohm devices. These sub-ohm kits have larger coils which can absorb the thicker e-liquid effectively.
It is important to choose the right ratio for your device, as using the wrong one can cause the performance of your device to be impaired. For example, using a high VG e-liquid in a starter kit or pod system can cause dry hits and for the coil to burn out prematurely, as the small coil struggles to absorb the thicker e-liquid. Whereas, using a 50/50 e-liquid in a sub-ohm device can cause the coil to over absorb and become too saturated, resulting in leaking and spitting.

Choosing the right nicotine strength
In order to choose the right nicotine strength, you should consider your previous smoking habits, as you want to try and match the nicotine content that your body is used to, to avoid unpleasant nicotine cravings. We recommend the following as a good place to start in identifying what strength may work for you:
- Heavy smoker - 20+ cigarettes a day: 18mg – 20mg
- Moderate smoker – 10 - 20 cigarettes a day: 10mg – 12mg
- Light smoker – 5 - 10 cigarettes a day: 6mg
- Casual smoker – Smokes few cigarettes or not every day: 0mg – 3mg
There are different types of nicotine available in e-liquids. Freebase nicotine is recommended for those who enjoy the ‘throat hit’ which is often associated with smoking, whereas nicotine salts are ideal for those who want a smooth inhale without feeling harsh on the throat. Choosing a flavour you love
Finally, finding a flavour you love is not just about making vaping more enjoyable, it also makes you more likely to stick to vaping if you enjoy the flavour, and less likely to return to smoking. What flavour will work best for you is highly personal and depends entirely on your own personal preferences.
While e-cigarettes are designed as an alternative to smoking, many people find they prefer using a non-tobacco flavoured e-liquid. If you think about it, most people do not smoke for the flavour. Some people do like the familiar taste of tobacco flavoured e-liquids, but other flavours like menthols and fruit flavours tend to be the more popular choice.
A good place to start is to go for flavours that reflect foods and drinks you like, such as your favourite fruit or dessert. There are countless flavours available, and don’t be afraid to try a few. Some vapers find a flavour they love and will continue to use it all the time, but others will rotate between different flavours to keep things interesting.
