About alternatives to disposable vapes
Now that disposable vapes are no longer available in the UK, many vapers are looking to get started with a reusable vape kit.
There are many benefits to a reusable vape kit, from cost to environmental, and they also offer a lot more room for you to personalise your vaping experience to better suit your needs.
Disposable vapes alternatives – which types are there?
Prefilled pod kits are a great option to consider when you are first making this transition, as they remain simple to use and offer a very similar feel and flavour to what you will have been used to. Some devices, often referred to as '600 puff disposable style' offer a direct replacement for disposable vapes, but with the added benefit of a rechargeable battery and replaceable pods.
Other prefilled pod kits, known as big puff vapes, offer a higher e-liquid capacity and higher puff count per pod change, which makes them ideal for those who are frequently on the go and want a device that can keep up with them. They are available in a wide variety of e-liquid capacities, ranging from 4ml to 24ml, and depending on the device can offer up to 20,000+ puffs before the pod and refill will need to be replaced.
If you are interested in moving to the most cost-effective option, or would prefer more freedom to personalise your vape, you might want to consider a refillable vape kit. These devices can be consistantly refilled with any compatible vape juice, and you will only need to replace the coil or pod when it starts to taste burnt. This not only means you are less limited in flavour range, but also allows you to choose the specific nicotine strength that will best suit your needs. Plus, some of these devices will offer added features like variable wattage and adjustable airflow, which allow you to tailor your experience to best suit your preferences.
Benefits of these alternatives
Obviously, the main benefit of these reusable alternatives is that they are still available to purchase, whereas disposable vapes have now been banned in the UK. But the benefits don’t stop there.
Reusable vape kits are a much more budget-friendly option, helping you save money in the long-run compared to the continued cost of disposable vapes. Depending on the type of device you choose the initial cost of the device may be a bit more than the cost of a disposable device. But, from there the cost of using the device is much less than having to constantly replace the vape every time the e-liquid runs out.
For prefilled pod kits the initial cost of the device tends to be quite comparable to that of a single-use vape, and the only purchase that will need to be made regularly after that is replacement prefilled pods. Standard 2ml prefilled pods are usually sold in packs of two for a similar price as that of a disposable vape, and are often included in multibuy offers which can bring the price down even further. For example, the Elf Bar ELFA PRO pods are sold in packs of two for £5.99, so you get twice as much e-liquid for around the same price you would have paid for one 2ml disposable vape.
Refillable vape kits are even more cost effective, as the coils or pods will only need to be replaced when the start to burn out. The bottles of e-liquid also offer much more bang for your buck, with a standard 10ml bottle of e-liquid costs on average £3.99, giving you five times as much e-liquid for less than the price of a single disposable vape.
We estimate that an average user, using 1ml of e-liquid per day, would have used around 182 2ml disposable vapes per year at a cost of £910, or 47 8ml big puff disposable vapes at a cost of £611. By switching to a reusable 8ml big puff vape kit the cost for a year would drop to £483, a saving of £427 or £128 respectively.
However, switching to a refillable vape kit can cost as little as £159 per year, a saving of £751 a year compared to if you were to continue using 2ml disposable vapes. We delve further into this in our post 'The cost of disposables vs vape kits'.
Another important benefit to switching to a reusable vape kit is that they are a much more environmentally friendly alternative to disposables. While the entire disposable vape has to be thrown away when the e-liquid runs out, reusable vapes have rechargeable batteries, meaning it is only the pod/coil which will need to be regularly disposed of and replaced.
This not only cuts down on the amount of plastic waste being produced, but also the electrical waste.
