About alternatives to disposable vapes

Disposable vapes offer a convenient short-term option, perfect if you are going to a festival or on a night out and need something to keep your cravings at bay, but don’t want to have to take your vape kit and other vaping accessories with you.

However, using disposables all the time can be a costly way to vape. Each single disposable containing 2 ml of e-liquid costs around the same amount as a 10 ml bottle of e-liquid, or a pack of prefilled pods. Switching to a permanent device with replaceable pods or a refillable tank can be a much more budget-friendly option in the long run.

Not only are they costly to your wallet, but disposable vapes are not current recyclable, so using them long-term can result in a lot of extra waste being sent to landfill. Transitioning to a reusable vape kit will help you minimise the waste you are producing as you will only need to dispose of used pods or coils, rather than the entire kit.

Another benefit to using an alternative to disposables is that they offer more control, such as the ability to choose the nicotine strength that best suits your needs. Where most disposables are available in the highest nicotine strength, 20 mg/ml, not everyone will need this much nicotine to manage their cravings. E-liquids are available in a wide variety of strengths, so you can match your strength to your previous smoking habits, and also have the option to decrease your nicotine strength over time if you want.

Alternatives to disposable vapes FAQ

Are disposable vapes cheaper than reusable vape kits?

Although disposable vapes are very inexpensive, if you are using them exclusively the price can quickly mount up. Although the initial investment in a reusable vape kit is a bit more than you would spend on a disposable vape, the cost from there on is actually lower than long-term use of disposables.

For example, if you are using 3 disposable a week you are likely spending between £12 - £18 a week. Each disposable contains a maximum of 2 ml of e-liquid, so you are effectively paying between £2 – £3 per ml of e-liquid. Whereas, a 10 ml bottle of e-liquid will last longer and usually costs around £4, so you are paying just 40p per ml of e-liquid.

Not only that but the battery in a reusable vape kit can be repeatedly recharged and has an average lifespan of 18 months depending on usage, meaning you can get a lot of use out of your kit before you need to think about replacing it.

Can I refill my disposable vape?

Unless the device is specifically sold as being refillable, disposable vapes cannot be refilled with e-liquid and attempting to do so can damage the device and cause it to not work as expected.

Not only can they not be refilled, but the battery inside of a disposable vape is a single-use battery, designed to last approximately as long as the e-liquid inside. Meaning that even if the device was refilled with e-liquid the battery would likely die soon after, making the device unusable.

Is a 20 mg/ml disposable high in nicotine?

20 mg/ml is the highest nicotine strength allowed in the UK. While heavy smokers may find that this is the strength they need to keep their nicotine cravings at bay, this will not be the case for everyone.

Most disposable vapes are only available in high nicotine strengths, and many people do not actually need this much nicotine to satiate their cravings. For short-term use for special occasions or trips this is not a problem, however, if you are using disposables often you may be introducing more nicotine into your system than you need.

Refillable vape kits can be filled with your choice of compatible e-liquid, and e-liquids are available in a variety of strengths from 3 mg/ml up to 20 mg/ml, and are also available without nicotine altogether. This allows you to match the nicotine strength to your needs based on your previous smoking habits, so you can manage your cravings effectively. If you are unsure which nicotine strength would best suit you take a look at our blog post ‘Which strength e-liquid should I use?’

Can I recycle used disposable vapes?

Unfortunately there is currently no way to recycle disposable vapes, as they contain built-in batteries and remnants of nicotine containing e-liquid. This means that every used disposable ends up in landfill, which is something we should try to avoid where we can.

If you are looking for a vaping option that is more environmentally friendly you should consider switching to a reusable vape kit. These devices can be recharged repeatedly so there is no need to replace the device for quite some time, and the only parts that will need to be disposed of are the used pods or coils, creating much less waste than continuing to use single-use disposables.
