What is an e-cigarette?
An electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette, is a device used as a smoking cessation tool. It heats the e-liquid contained in the tank to form a vapor which can be inhaled. E-cigarettes are designed as a less harmful alternative to smoking and are primarily used as a stop smoking aide.
An e-cigarette is typically made up of three components; a rechargeable battery, a tank or clearomiser, and a coil (atomiser).
What is e-liquid?
E-liquids, otherwise referred to as ‘oils’, 'vape juice', ‘juice’ or just ‘liquid’, are the substance vaporised within an e-cigarette and inhaled by the user. E-liquids are made up of PG (Propylene Glycol), VG (Vegetable Glycerine) and food grade flavouring. They can be purchased either with or without a nicotine content.
PG is a thin liquid that is used to hold the flavourings and provides the ‘throat hit’ which many associate with smoking. Whereas VG is a thicker consistency and is smoother to vape, it is also responsible for producing the cloud of vapor.
E-liquids can be purchased in a range of different nicotine strengths and ratios of PG/VG, and are available in countless different delicious flavours.
For a deeper understanding of e-liquids, read our guide 'e-liquids explained'
What are the different types of vaping?
There are two different types of vaping; Mouth to lung (MTL) and direct to lung (DTL).
MTL vaping is preferable for new vapers as it is the same way you would inhale when smoking and therefore feels more familiar, most starter kits come with a MTL tank.
DTL is when the vapour is inhaled directly into the lungs and it preferable for advanced vapers who are using advanced vape kits with large, airy tanks.
Is vaping safer than smoking?
Yes! Many health organisations in the UK support vaping as a less harmful alternative to smoking and Public Health England have found e-cigarettes to be at least 95% safer than smoking traditional cigarettes.
Traditional cigarettes release countless different toxic substances and carcinogens upon combustion; however, e-cigarettes do not reach the point of combustion as they are heat not burn devices. Additionally, e-liquids do not contain any of the harmful substances found in cigarettes except for nicotine, which is an addictive substance.
There have been many studies into e-cigarette use carried out over the past 10 years and research shows that e-cigarettes are a much safer alternative and are also an effective stop smoking tool.
Is vaping cheaper than smoking?
Research has found that the average smoker who makes the switch to vaping saves around £350 per year. After purchasing your vape kit the only monthly expenses are replacement coils and bottles of e-liquid, both of which last substantially longer than a packet of cigarettes!
To help you make the move from smoking to vaping, read our 'Switching Made Simple' guide.
Are e-cigarettes and e-liquids age restricted?
Yes, e-cigarettes and all associated items are covered by the same age restrictions as buying cigarettes, you need to be 18 years or older to purchase an e-cigarette. If you are shopping in one of our retail vape stores and are lucky enough to look under the age of 25 you will be asked to show a valid form of ID before making any purchases, and failure to show this ID will result in a refused sale. If you're shopping in our online vape shop, you will need to verify your age at checkout
What nicotine strength should I use?
E-liquids come in a range of different nicotine strengths to suit the needs of all customers. The strength you will need to start vaping with will depend mainly on how many traditional cigarettes you have previously been smoking. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend the following;
Heavy smoker - 20+ cigarettes a day: 18mg – 20mg
Moderate smoker – 10 - 20 cigarettes a day: 10mg – 12mg
Light smoker – 5 - 10 cigarettes a day: 6mg
Casual smoker – Smokes few cigarettes and not every day: 0mg – 3mg
Once you have been vaping for a while you can also try and drop to a lower nicotine strength to decrease your nicotine intake. Some people can do this within a month or two, some will take longer, but most will be able to lower their nicotine intake at some point. It is important to remember that when you decrease your strength you may find you are vaping more for the first few weeks while your body adjusts, this is normal.
If you are using a Sub-ohm vape kits or high-powered device, we usually recommend no higher than a 6mg.
How often will I need to change my coil?
This question is asked often, but is very difficult to answer. The life of your vape device coil will depend on a variety of different factors;
Your e-liquid – Sweet flavoured e-liquids taste great, but can decrease the life of your coil. Stronger flavours such as menthols may seem to make the coil last longer as the strong flavour masks the burning taste for longer.
Power – If you are using a variable wattage device, the higher you run the wattage, the faster your coil will burn out. All coils have a recommended wattage range at which they will perform best which can be found on the box or printed on the side of the coil, staying within this range will help you get the most time out of each coil.
Vaping frequency – How often you use your device is a big factor, if you are a light vaper and only use your e-cigarette a few times a day your coil could last you a very long time, but heavier vapers will need to change the coil more frequently.
What is a POD device?
A POD vape device is a form of e-cigarette that utilises a disposable pod in place of a tank. Depending on the device, these pods can either be purchased pre-filled with e-liquid or you can buy a reusable pods which can be refilled multiple times with your chosen e-liquid. Pod devices are a form of starter kit and are often designed to closely resemble the feel of a cigarette, making them ideal for new vapers. Once the pod has been used you simply through it away and replace with a new one.
For a more detailed look at POD kits, read our Vaping Pod System Buyers Guide.
What is variable wattage?
A variable wattage device allows the user to change the power output up and down to best suit their preferences and the coil they are using. Some starter kits have variable wattage capabilities but it is usually more common in intermediate and advanced devices.
What is sub-ohm vaping?
Sub-ohming refers to the use of a tank with a coil reading less than one ohm. Some MTL tanks will utilise a sub-ohm coil, but sub-ohming usually refers to larger tanks with bigger coils and large airflow designs which produce plumes of clouds.
What are shortfills?
Shortfills are bottles of e-liquid larger than 10mls. In accordance with UK law these bottles do not contain nicotine, but are filled short of the top to allow the user to add a nicotine shot if they wish, hence the name shortfill.
What are nic shots?
Nicotine shots, referred to as nic shots, are 10ml bottles of nicotine mixed with unflavoured VG/PG base which can be added to shortfill bottles of e-liquid. These nic shots are usually unflavoured but can also be flavoured to add a cool or fizzy finish to the e-liquid.
What flavour e-liquid should I choose?
Choosing a flavour is a very personal thing as preferred flavour profiles vary from person to person. It is important to choose a flavour that you love as this will help you to stick with an e-cigarette and avoid having cravings for cigarettes.
What are external batteries?
External batteries are batteries which can be removed from the device and charged separately (browse our range of batteries & chargers). They are usually used in advanced devices as they are higher powered than the smaller batteries needed in starter kits. Having external batteries allows the user to keep a spare set of charged batteries that they can swap out when needed.
How do I clean and maintain my e-cigarette?
E-cigarettes are easy to clean and maintain with proper care. Any parts which can be dismantled can be wiped down with a dry cloth or alcohol wipe, it is important to avoid introducing water to any parts as if they are not dry this can interfere with the operation of the device. Drip tips can also be removed to clean any debris or dust with a cotton bud, this will prevent it from dropping down into the coil.

What is CBD?
CBD is an abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of the naturally occurring cannabinoid compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant. CBD vape products contain this active ingredient and are used by many people as a health supplement as part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Troubleshooting
Why does my e-cigarette taste burnt?
If your e-cigarette is starting to taste burnt, bitter, or is feeling harsher than usual this more than likely means you need to change your coil. The coil, or atomiser, is the part of your e-cigarette which heats to vaporise the e-liquid and contains a wire or mesh coil surrounded by cotton. The cotton becomes saturated with e-liquid which then vaporises when the coil is heated, but after a while the cotton will begin to burn and taste unpleasant. At this point you will need to replace the coil with a fresh one.
When fitting a new coil ensure you are following the manufacturer guide and are fitting it correctly, if you are unsure how to change your coil you can pop in to your local Evapo store and a member of our team will be happy to show you how to do this correctly. Before fitting the new coil, add a couple of drops of e-liquid to any exposed cotton around the coil to kick start the absorption of e-liquid, this is called priming your coil. Once you have inserted the primed coil and filled your tank with e-liquid, allow the device to sit for 5-10 minutes before using it to ensure the cotton is fully saturated and not dry. If you use your device too quickly after changing the coil and the cotton has not absorbed enough e-liquid the cotton could burn straight away.
Why is my tank leaking?
There are a few reasons that a tank could be leaking, use the following tips to troubleshoot the issue and if you are still unsure as to the cause of the leaking or would like further help pop in to your local Evapo store and speak to a team member.
Using the wrong ratio of e-liquid for your device can cause some leaking. If you have a large tank with a big coil it is preferable to use a high VG e-liquid, 70/30 or higher. Using a thinner e-liquid means the coil could over absorb the e-liquid, it then has no where to go but out through the airflow or up through the drip tip.
If the e-liquid appears to be seeping out from the base of the glass on the tank it may be that the 0 rings which seal the gaps between the glass and the base of the tank have become brittle or damaged. There will be replacement o rings in the box for the tank or device which can easily be replace.
Check your glass, even a small crack will mean that the internal vacuum of the tank will be broken and the juice will seep out. Some tanks will come with a spare glass in the box, but replacement glasses can be easily purchased.
Are my batteries safe to use?
If you are using external batteries it is extremely important that you take good care of them. If batteries are showing any form of damage at either end or to the plastic wrap they will need to be replaced and appropriately disposed of immediately. The plastic wrap can be replaced with a new battery wrap, but this will need to be done well to ensure safety, if you are unsure it is best to err on the side of caution and replace the batteries.
I can’t taste my e-liquid anymore, what can I do?
If you have been using the same e-liquid for a while you may develop ‘vapers tongue’, this can easily be rectified by changing to a different flavour. Many people recommend a menthol flavour to help combat vapers tongue.
If you are suffering from a cold or dehydration this can also affect your sense of taste.
My e-liquid has changed colour, is this normal?
E-liquids get darker over time, this is nothing to worry about, as long as your e-liquid is within the use by date it is still safe to use. The same way that a sliced apple will brown with time exposed to the air, an e-liquid that has been exposed to the air will also darken in colour.
