On the 1st October this year a new Vaping Products Duty will be coming into effect, which means we’re going to be seeing a price increase on many of our everyday vaping essentials.

The new vape tax will be introduced to all e-liquid containing products, including both 10ml and shortfill e-liquids, along with nic shots, prefilled pods, big puff refills and prefilled vape kits that include a pod. That means now is the time to stock up on all of your favourite e-liquids or prefilled pods at the lower price to prepare before the increase comes into play. So, lets take a look at what this will mean for vapers and how we can get ahead of the vape tax.

How much more will it cost to vape?

The vape tax will impose a price increase of £2.64 including VAT per 10ml of e-liquid regardless of nicotine content, meaning that some products are going to see quite a steep increase compared to others.

For example, the average 10ml nic salt e-liquid costs £3.99, so with the new vape tax plus VAT they are expected to cost upwards of £6.63 after October. However, a 100ml shortfill contains 10 times as much e-liquid and will therefore be subject to an additional cost of £22 just from the vape tax. Add in VAT and the average price of a 100ml shortfill is set to rise from £12.99 to at least £39.39.

Product typeCurrent average priceMinimum price after vape tax
10ml e-liquid£3.99£6.63
2ml prefilled pods (2 pack)£4.99£6.05
12ml big puff pod & refill£6.99£10.16
50ml shortfill£8.99£22.19
100ml shortfill£12.99£39.39
10ml nic shot£1.99£4.63

One thing to note is that we may not see all products increase in price immediately from the 1st of October, as there is a 6-month grace period for retailers to sell unstamped stock. This is because any e-liquid containing vaping products manufactured or imported from 1st of October will need to be sealed with a duty stamp, demonstrating that the vaping products duty has been applied to that product. However, products manufactured or imported before 1st of October will not have the stamp, so it will not actually be illegal for unstamped products to be sold until 1st April 2027.

Because of this, retailers may make the choice to increase prices gradually as new, stamped stock enters circulation. This means it is hard to anticipate exactly when you may see the price of your favourite products increase, which is why many vapers are using the time before the 1st of October to build up their supply of their favourites before the price increase comes into play.

Another factor to consider is that the prices in the table above represent the minimum expected price for each product. In reality the cost of applying the duty stamps, lower volumes of available stock, and more restricted cashflow for manufacturers will likely result in an additional cost to customers.

Our top tips to beat the vape tax

  1. 1. Don’t panic!
Although it is an unfortunate reality that vaping is going to cost more, there is still plenty of time to get ahead of the vape tax. With a little planning most vapers can use the time ahead of the October 1st to stock up on their favourites at the lower, pre-tax price.
  2. 2. Understand your vaping habits
Taking a minute to think about your vaping habits can not only help you understand your own usage but also help you plan your budget for after the vape tax. How long does a bottle of e-liquid or prefilled pod usually last you? How often do you repurchase, and could you change your purchasing habits to save money?
  3. 3. Remember that not all vaping products will be affected
While it can be tempting to panic buy everything you need to keep you stocked up, a more strategic approach is definitely better. While picking up some extra e-liquid or an extra pack of prefilled pods with each purchase is definitely a good idea, products like refillable vape kits, coils, and refillable pods are not going to increase in price. So, it is better to buy these at your usual rate of purchase, or even to consider how you could use them more effectively to save money.
  4. 4. Stock up where you can
E-liquids have a lengthy best before date, usually a year or two after the manufacturing date, so stocking up on your favourite e-liquids or prefilled pod packs is something we strongly suggest. This is particularly the case if you usually use shortfill e-liquids, as the significant price increase may see the availability of shortfills drop once the vape tax is in place.
  5. 5. Utilise bulk buy and multibuy offers
Most e-liquids and prefilled pod packs are available on some kind of offer, whether that is a mix and match multibuy or in a bulk buy pack. Not only do these offers make it easy to stock up but they also save you money compared to buying the items individually. Where your budget allows, picking up an extra multibuy offer to store away is the best way to save money in the long run.

The best ways to stock up

As we’ve said, the best way to stock up on e-liquid products ahead of the vape tax is to take advantage of the many offers available to help you save money. The main things to think about when choosing the best deals for you are your budget, and whether you have a favourite flavour you want to stock up on.

If you usually stick to just one or two flavours then a bulk buy pack is the most cost effective way to build up your supply at the lower price. Our bulk buy vape juice deals let you pick up a pack of ten 10ml bottles of your favourite e-liquid at a lower price than their individual cost. We also offer bulk buy vape pod deals on both 2ml prefilled pods and big puff pod & refill packs which offer boxes of five or ten, depending on the product.

If you prefer to switch up your flavour often and experiment with lots of different tastes, a mix & match multibuy deal like our 4 for £10 vape juice or 2 for £20 shortfills may be a better fit. These let you curate a selection of different flavours, strengths and brands from within the deal at a great price.

If there isn’t currently room in your budget to bulk buy your favourites but you still want to be able to pick up a few extra bottles of e-liquid where you can, you might want to consider more budget-friendly e-liquid options like our 6 for £10 nic salts or the affordable 88Vape e-liquid range.

Will vaping still be cheaper than smoking?

While the vape tax is going to close the gap a little, rest assured that vaping will still be a more cost-effective alternative to smoking. The aim of the vape tax is to make vaping less appealing and affordable for young people as a way to tackle underage vaping, but to ensure it is still an accessible alternative for adult smokers and current vapers. The price of a pack of cigarettes is constantly rising, but that is not expected to be the case with vaping.

At the end of the day the vape tax is going to have an effect on all vapers, which is why now is the time to start preparing to lessen the blow. Taking the time to consider your vaping habits & budget and stocking up on products you know are going to be affected are the best ways to help ease the transition and save money in the long run.
