When using an e-cigarette, it is important to use the correct ratio e-liquid in order to get the most out of the experience.
In this post, we will be helping you to identify what ratio e-liquid is best suited to the device you are using.
What Is in My E-Liquids?
The two ingredients that make up the bulk of an e-liquid are vegetable glycerine (VG) and propylene glycol (PG). These two ingredients and how much of each the e-liquid consists of is what will dictate the ratio of the e-liquid. Vegetable glycerine is an odourless and colourless liquid with a slightly sweet taste.
Vegetable glycerine is the more viscous liquid, and when vaporised it is known to create large clouds. Propylene glycol is also odourless, colourless and with a slightly sweet flavour, and although it is not as viscous as VG it is still quite a thick liquid.
PG is known to mainly provide the throat hit in an e-liquid and is the carrier for the flavour molecules.
Who Should Use A 50/50 E-liquid?
Generally, the majority of starter kits with a mouth to lung draw will work best with a 50:50 ratio e-liquid.
There are some exceptions, anything with a sub-ohm tank, but for the most part starter kits contain a small coil that will best absorb a thinner consistency liquid like a 50:50 or even a 60:40 high PG.
This is also the case with pod systems and clearomiser style devices. 50:50 e-liquids tend to be more suited towards new vapers because they give a bit more of a throat hit which can feel more similar to smoking than the smoothness of a high VG liquid, and they also tend to offer a wider range of nicotine strengths.
Who Should Use A High VG E-Liquid?
High VG e-liquids are ideal for anyone using a sub-ohm tank or most kinds of rebuildable atomisers. Because these tend to have a direct to lung draw and produce a lot more vapour, they better suit the smoothness and cloud production of a high VG liquid.
For the most part, high VG e-liquids come in a wide variety of flavours and are often available in shortfills, however, the range of nicotine strength available is often limited and you will rarely find a high VG liquid in a higher strength than 6mg.
Why Is It Important?
If the wrong ratio e-liquid is used in an e-cigarette it can negatively affect the performance of your device.
If a high VG liquid is put into a tank that works best with 50:50 liquids, the thickness of the VG can clog up the coil or cause it to not absorb liquid as quickly, this will cause the coil to prematurely burn out and require changing more frequently.
On the other hand, if a 50:50 or high PG liquid is used in a tank that works best with a high VG liquid, it can give the user an unpleasant throat hit, or cause the coil to over absorb the thinner liquid which can lead to leaking from the airflow or excess juice spitting into the users mouth upon inhaling.
