Guide to choosing your first vape kit

Choosing your first e-cigarette kit is an important step in your vaping journey. There are countless starter kits available and choosing the perfect one to suit you is important to making the switch from smoking to vaping as smooth and easy as possible. We’re going to take a look at the different types of starter kit to help you make an informed decision.

About Starter Kits

Starter vape kits are devices that have been designed specifically for new vapers. E-cigarettes were created to offer an alternative to smoking, and so these devices aim to replicate the feel of smoking a cigarette, to help offer an authentic experience that feels familiar to new vapers and makes the transition from smoking to vaping as smooth as possible.

Starter kits maintain a simple set-up to make them accessible to new users, making them easy to use and approachable. There are usually minimal or no buttons, different settings, and unnecessary features, for straight-forward set up and continued use.

There are a couple of different types of starter kits that have different characteristics to make them more suitable to different types of vapers. Read on to find out more about the different devices available.

Starter Vape Kits

Prefilled pod kits

Prefilled pod kits are the simplest type of starter kit, ideal for those who want to make the switch from smoking to vaping but are maybe not the most tech savvy or lead very busy lifestyles. These devices utilise pods that are designed specifically for use with the device which can be purchased prefilled with e-liquid in a range of flavours and nicotine strengths. This cuts out the need for refilling and coil changes, letting the user simply replace the coil with a new one as needed.

As the pods come prefilled there is no need to wait for them to absorb the e-liquid before use, and they are ready to go straight out of the pack. This also means you can change the flavour in just a click, ideal for when you are on the go and short of time.

We offer a wide range of prefilled pod kits from popular vaping brands like Elf Bar Mate, JUUL, and Vuse.

Refillable pod kits

Refillable pod kits offer the best of both worlds, combining the ease of a pod kit with the variety of a tank style device. These devices feature a plastic pod in place of a glass tank which gives them a robust and sturdy design well suited to those who prefer a compact device which is easy to store and travel-friendly.

Refillable pod systems are available with two different designs. Some use closed pods, which can be refilled but will need to be disposed of when the pod starts to burn out. Others contain a changeable coil which means that the pod can be used longer-term with regular coil changes. Both types of pods can be refilled with your preferred e-liquid and are best paired with a 50/50 or high PG e-liquid. This gives you the freedom to choose the exact flavour and nicotine strength that suits you best from the countless e-liquids available.

These devices have a built-in battery which can be easily recharged via a USB charger cable. They usually have minimal buttons to operate the device with a user-friendly design, ideal for when you are first getting to grips with using an e-cigarette.

Our range includes refillable pod kits from all of the biggest vaping brands, including Innokin, Joyetech, Uwell, and SMOK.

Tank style starter kits

Traditional, tank starter kits are the most popular type of starter e-cigarette. They are comprised of a battery, a refillable tank usually made of glass and metal, and a replaceable coil. The coil housed within the tank will need to be replaced periodically, as it will eventually start to taste burnt as the cotton inside begins to burn out. Changing a coil is fairly straight-forward, but it is usually preferable to change it when the tank is empty or contains only a small amount of e-liquid to minimise mess.

How long a coil lasts will depend on a number of factors, such as what e-liquid is being used and the frequency of use. It is fairly easy to tell when the coil needs to be changed as the flavour will change, tasting either burnt or bitter. You can help increase the longevity of your coil by keeping the tank topped up with e-liquid, locking the device when not in use, and priming the coil well when it is first inserted.

These types of devices tend to have a slightly more powerful battery than most pod kits, offering more charge time and sometimes a bit more power output. They can also offer some additional features like adjustable airflow, which lets you choose how tight or loose the inhale feels to suit your preferences.

Starter kits are best used with 50/50 e-liquids, which offers users the choice between countless different flavours and a wide range of nicotine strength options. This means that users can find an e-liquid that they love, which will keep them coming back to their e-cigarette and help make smoking a thing of the past. This also means they can select the nicotine strength that best suits their needs, as the amount of nicotine required will depend on previous smoking habits.

We offer a wide range of starter kits from popular vaping brands like Aspire, Innokin, and Joyetech.

How to set up your device

Each device will include a detailed user manual in the box with instructions on how to set up and use the device correctly. It is always a good idea to take a look at the manual and familiarise yourself with your new device before getting started.

If you have chosen a pre-filled pod system there is minimal set up required, simply pop in your chosen prefilled pod and you are ready to go.

If you have opted for a device with refillable closed pods start by filling the pod with your chosen e-liquid and then allow 5-10 minutes before using so that the cotton can fully absorb the e-liquid.

If you are using a device with replaceable coils, apply a few drops of your chosen e-liquid onto any exposed cotton patches on the coil. This process is known as priming the coil and will help improve the longevity of your coils. Avoid putting e-liquid directly into the centre of the coil as this may cause some spitting when you come to use it. Once you have primed the coil, insert it into the tank and top up the tank with e-liquid. After 5 – 10 minutes the e-liquid will be fully absorbed, and your device will be ready to use.

It is important to ensure the coil has had time to fully absorb the e-liquid before you start to use the device to avoid dry hits or burning the coil out prematurely.

Once your coil is primed and has absorbed the e-liquid you are ready to turn on the device. This is usually achieved by pressing the fire button 3-5 times in quick succession.
