What are puff counts?

A vapes puff count is the number of puffs that the manufacturer estimates their device offers based on the amount of e-liquid it contains and the design of the device. For disposable vapes the puff count is representative of how many puffs per device, while for big puff pod kits it is representative of the puff count before the pods will need to be changed.

It can only ever be an estimate because there are a few different factors that will change how many puffs a device holds for you, including how deeply you inhale, how often you vape and so on. This means that the number of puffs you can expect from a vape can vary widely, but you can still get a good general idea from the advertised estimate.

What is a big puff vape?

A big puff vape is a type of disposable vape or prefilled pod kit which comes with more than 2ml of vape juice. The higher quantity of e-liquid means it that can offer a higher puff count than a standard 2ml vape. Generally, big puff disposable vapes are those that offer up to 1,200 puffs or more.

The difference between big puff disposables and pod kits

As you can probably gather from the name, big puff disposable vapes are a type of single-use vape which will last as long as the e-liquid it comes with, and will then need to be disposed of and replaced. Although many big puff disposables come with a ‘refill container’ they cannot be repeatedly refilled once this container is empty.

However, big puff pod kits are a type of reusable vape which gives you the best of both worlds, combining high puff counts with a rechargeable battery and changeable pods. Some kits, like the DOJO Blast 6000 come with a 2ml pod and a 10ml attachable refill container which continuously refills the pod until both are empty, at which point the pod can be swapped for a new one. For manufacturers to work out their estimate of how many puffs a vape contains, they need an accurate and repeatable way of running out a vape. It’s likely that they employ a machine that’s able to replicate MTL puffs, which they use to work out an average estimate by rounding up or down to the nearest hundred. It’s worth bearing in mind that machines like this aren’t vaping the way a human would, so there’s always likely to be some discrepancy. How your vaping style affects your puff count

It’s always worth remembering that how you personally vape will affect your puff count for any given device. If you like to take larger inhales, for example, you’ll get less puffs from a vape overall. Likewise, if you take short and shallow inhales, you may enjoy more puffs than advertised. Also, if you vape frequently, you may end up using up the battery more quickly and therefore find that your vape lasts for less time.

If you want to know how long big puff vapes last in comparison to smoking, then it’s worth knowing that the NHS advise that one 2ml 20 mg/ml disposable vape is equivalent to one pack of cigarettes. Here’s what that might look like when it comes to number of days:

So a moderate smoker who smokes between 11 and 20 cigarettes a day who chooses a 6,000 puff vape with 20 mg/ml nicotine can expect it to last for the equivalent of 6 packets of cigarettes, or around 8 days. However, it is important to also bear in mind that some vapers find they do vape with more frequency than they would have smoked, so again this will vary based on your vaping style.

Picking the right puff count is always going to be a personal choice. However, when making your decision, it’s worth thinking about things like how often you vape, how often you’re happy to rebuy, how large you’d like your vape to be, and what your budget is.
