Nic salts FAQ

What are nic salts?

Nicotine salts (nic salts) are a form of nicotine which has been extracted from the tobacco plant using an acidic base. Nic salts are primarily known for offering an extremely smooth inhale, even at high nicotine strengths. This makes them ideal for new vapers as they can match their nicotine intake well to satisfy nicotine cravings.

Nicotine salts also absorb into the blood stream very quickly, within 20 seconds of being inhaled, allowing the user to satisfy their nicotine cravings quickly, even when on-the-go.

For these reasons nicotine salt e-liquids have become extremely popular, especially for those who require a high nicotine strength but find freebase nicotine too harsh.

Do all e-liquids use nic salts?

Not all e-liquids contain nicotine salts, some will contain an alternative nicotine known as freebase nicotine, while some of course contain no nicotine at all.

Nicotine salts and freebase nicotine are both derived from the tobacco leaf, however, due to different extraction methods they each have characteristics that make them suited to different types of vapers.

Nicotine salts are characterised by their extremely smooth inhale and fast absorption. This means that they are ideal for vapers who do not like the throat hit of freebase nicotine and prefer to vape in short sessions throughout the day.

Are nic salts better than freebase nicotine?

Nic salts are not necessarily better than freebase nicotine, as which type of nicotine you prefer will depend entirely on your personal preferences.

Those who are looking for a smooth inhale and quick nicotine hit may prefer nicotine salts, whereas those who are looking for a throat hit, and slower nicotine absorption may prefer freebase.

If you are unsure which type of nicotine would best suit your needs, head in to your local Evapo store and speak to a member of our team, or reach out to our Customer Service team. We will be happy to advise on the characteristics of each nicotine type and offer recommendations for e-liquids.

Can nic salts be used in short fills?

If you prefer nic salts but are now looking to move on to short fill e-liquids, you can still continue to enjoy the smooth inhale of nicotine salts. Nicotine shots are available with both freebase and nicotine salts, so you can select the option that best suits your needs.

Nicotine salt nic shots are used in the same way as any other nicotine shot, by emptying the contents of the nicotine shot/s into the short fill bottle and shaking to incorporate.

If you are unsure of how to use nicotine shots pop in to your local Evapo store or reach out to our Customer Service team and we will be happy to advise.

What are the disadvantages of nic salts?

Nic salts are an extremely popular type of e-liquid, but if you are looking for a vape juice that offers a strong throat hit then they may not be right for you. Nic salts are characterised by their smooth inhale, even at high nicotine strengths, and offering little to no throat hit.

While some vapers find these types of e-liquid more comfortable to use, others may be looking for a throat hit as this is quite reminiscent of smoking cigarettes. In this case you would likely be better suited to a freebase nicotine e-liquid, which offers a satisfying throat hit which increases the higher the nicotine content.

How many cigarettes is 20 mg of nic salt equal to?

Our body will generally absorb between 1 – 2 mg of nicotine for every cigarette smoked, and so 1ml of 20 mg/ml e-liquid is equivalent to around 20 cigarettes. This is the same for both nic salt and freebase nicotine e-liquids.

We have a helpful blog post which takes a closer look at this, if you would like to learn more about what nicotine strength you need and how the different types of e-liquid available – ‘How many cigarettes is 20mg of nicotine equivalent to?’.

What happens if you put nic salt in a regular vape?

Nic salt e-liquids will usually have a 50/50 or high PG formula, which makes them perfect for pairing with starter kits and refillable pod systems. Most prefilled pod kits and disposable vapes also contain nic salt e-liquids.

However, sub-ohm and advanced vape kits need a thicker consistency e-liquid in order to work effectively, these are called high VG e-liquids. High VG e-liquids are most commonly available in short fill bottles, which come with a nicotine free formula. You can add nicotine shots to short fill e-liquids, and nic shots are available with both nic salt and freebase nicotine. However, these more powerful devices are designed to be used with low nicotine strengths, like a 3 mg/ml. These devices are not suitable to be used with 10ml bottles of nic salt e-liquids with a 50/50 formula.

This effectively means that nic salts can be used with any type of vape kit, as long as you are using the correct VG/PG ratio and nicotine strength to suit both you and your device.

Is 20mg nicotine salt a lot?

20 mg/ml is the highest nicotine strength that is available in the UK, and 1ml of 20 mg/ml e-liquid is equivalent to around 20 cigarettes. We usually recommend this strength to heavy smokers, who are used to a high nicotine intake and need to maintain this to avoid cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

If you are unsure which nicotine strength you should be using, take a look at our blog post ‘Which strength e-liquid should I use?’ to help you identify the best strength to get started with.

Can you use nic salts with sub-ohm coils?

Nic salts can be used with pretty much any vape kit, you just need to be sure you are using the right type of e-liquid to suit your device. If you are using a device which has the option of sub-ohm coils but is still a starter vape kit with a relatively low power output, like the Aspire PockeX, you can use 10ml nic salt e-liquids at your preferred strength without any problems.

However, if you are using a more powerful sub-ohm or advanced vape kit you will need to use a high VG e-liquid, which are usually purchased in nicotine free short fills. These short fills leave room in the bottle for the addition of enough nicotine shots to create a 3 mg/ml overall strength. For example, a 50ml short fill contains 50ml of e-liquid in a 60ml bottle, leaving room for one nicotine shot. Nicotine shots, often shortened to nic shots, are available with both nic salt and freebase nicotine, so you can chooser the one that best suits your preferences. However, these devices should not be used with 50/50 nic salt e-liquids as the formula is too thin and can cause leaking and spitting.

What are the best vapes for nic salt vape juice?

10ml bottles of 50/50 nic salts are available in a variety of different nicotine strengths and flavours, making them ideal for those who are new to vaping. But they are also the preferred option for many experienced vapers who prefer a mouth-to-lung vaping style.

50/50 nic salt e-liquids pair best with starter vape kits and pod systems, as they have the perfect consistency for these devices to absorb effectively, and the lower power setting and mouth-to-lung design makes them comfortable to use at any nicotine strength.
