Friday 31st of May 2019 is ‘World No Tobacco Day’, a day on which the World Health Organisation (WHO) campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco and the effects it can have on your lungs.
This year, many people are calling for the WHO to use this as an opportunity to reconsider their current stance on e-cigarettes and show support for the smoking cessation tool.
What Is World No Tobacco Day?
The theme of this years World No Tobacco Day is ‘tobacco and lung health’ and will is used as an opportunity to boost awareness worldwide of the dangers of smoking tobacco and how it can negatively affect health.
The campaign aims to give people an opportunity to give up smoking by starting with day, and taking it from there, with the aim of reducing worldwide tobacco consumption.
The WHO and Vaping
Currently the World Health Organisation do not support vaping as a stop smoking aid, and refuse to acknowledge the benefits of making the switch from smoking to vaping. This baffling fact has confused many people as the WHO continues to state that there is currently no evidence to show that e-cigarettes are a safer option than smoking.
However, many respected health organisations such as Public Health England and Cancer Research UK have published data supporting vaping as a much safer alternative and publicly recommend an e-cigarette as a smoking cessation tool.
The WHOs current views on vaping could be hugely detrimental to the vaping industry and all the good that e-cigarettes can do for helping users make a healthier lifestyle choice.
As arguably the biggest health organisation worldwide, the opinions they express are taken on board by governments and the public alike, with some countries even banning e-cigarette use based on the WHOs negative stance.
Not only this, but it is counterintuitive to organise campaigns to encourage the population to give up smoking, while also not acknowledging one of the most common and effective stop smoking tools. It could be considered that should the WHO change their stance on e-cigarettes, their support would go some way to combatting the scaremongering and misinformation that surrounds the vaping industry. With a positive endorsement from the World Health Organisation, many more people may choose to put down their cigarettes and pick up an e-cigarette.
It is hoped that in the future the WHO will review their current stance on e-cigarettes and take into account the wealth of data and research available supporting the findings that e-cigarettes are a safer alternative to smoking.
