Charging your device properly is one of the most important acts of maintenance you can do, helping prolong the life of the battery and letting you make the most of your device. In this post we will be giving some handy tips for how to safely charge your device and external batteries.

How to charge your vape

If your device has a built-in battery there are a few things to consider when choosing how to charge it.

Vape kits will almost always come with a charging cable in the box, where possible, always use the cable that came with the device. The charging cable can be plugged in to a computer or games console via the USB port, this will provide the right amp output to safely charge your device.

You can also use the cable with a plug and charge through a wall socket, but it is important to choose the right plug. Fast charge plugs designed for smart phones have an output that is too high for vape kits, and this can actually be detrimental to the battery and even cause it to short. We recommend using a plug that has a 1 amp output or less.

It can be tempting to pop your device on charge for a few minutes here and there to keep it going until you have time for a full charge. However, not allowing the battery to regularly reach a full charge can cause the battery life to deplete much more rapidly and shorten the life of your device, so always try to charge the device fully if you can before removing it from charge.

We also recommend charging your device on a level surface where possible to help keep it upright throughout the charge. Leaving a device on its side for too long can cause the e-liquid to leak, which can be a little annoying and messy!

When and where to charge

It can be tempting to charge your device overnight, however, you should not leave your device to charge unattended, and not all devices will automatically cut off when the batteries are full. If left to charge overnight this is not only a waste of your electricity, but could also deplete the battery, and pose a safety risk.

Vape kits take between 30 minutes to 2 hours to reach a full charge, depending on the size of the battery, and it is best to charge them in a place where you are able to keep an eye on the device and unplug it when it is fully charged.

You also need to consider where you are charging the device. Vape kits contain lithium-ion batteries, which do not do well with extreme temperatures. Obviously, it is easy to keep your device out of extremely low temperatures, but it is also easy to accidentally leave them in a place where they can become to hot. When charging your device make sure it is not left in direct sunlight or near any items that are likely to let out a lot of heat, like a radiator.

Finally, as with all li-ion batteries, do not leave your device to charge on an easily flammable surface, such as a carpet, blanket, or on your bed.

Charging external batteries

Having a vape kit that uses external batteries, meaning batteries that can be removed from the device, are a great option for more experienced vapers who want to be able to switch out their batteries throughout the day rather than having to wait for the device to charge.

While these batteries can be charged through the device, it is recommended that they should be charged externally using a battery bay charger.

These chargers have a number of built-in safety features that protect the battery from over-charging and help maintain the longevity of the battery so you can get the most out of it before it needs to be replaced.

If you are planning to carry spare batteries please remember that they will need to be stored in a plastic or silicone case to prevent damage and protect them from coming into contact with metallic objects that could cause them to vent.
