What is a short fill?
Short fills are bottles of e-liquid larger than 10 ml and, as per UK law, they are sold with a nicotine free formula.
The reason they are called short fills is that they are filled short of the top, to leave room for the addition of nicotine shots if the user prefers a nicotine containing e-liquid. Nicotine shots are 10 ml bottles which contain VG (vegetable glycerine), PG (propylene glycol), nicotine, and occasionally a small amount of flavouring in the case of fizzy and cool nicotine shots.
Short fills leave room to add enough nicotine shots to create a 3 mg/ml nicotine strength overall. It is not recommended to add more nicotine shots than those needed to create a 3 mg/ml, as this can dilute the flavour of the e-liquid.
How do I add nicotine to my short fill?
In order to add your nicotine shot/s to your short fill you will first need to remove the cap and nozzle on both the short fill bottle and the nicotine shots. You can then empty the contents of the nicotine shots into the short fill bottle and dispose of the nicotine shot bottles.
Once you have added the nicotine, replace the nozzle and cap on the short fill bottle, making sure they are secure and tight to avoid any mess. Give the short fill a thorough shake to evenly disperse the nicotine throughout the mixture, then the e-liquid is ready to use straight away.
What does high VG mean?
High VG describes the ratio of VG (vegetable glycerine) and PG (propylene glycol) in the e-liquid.
High VG e-liquids most commonly have a 70VG/30PG ratio, but can describe any e-liquid with a higher ratio of VG to PG.
As VG has a thick, syrup like consistency, high VG e-liquids are thicker than 50/50 or high PG e-liquid. This makes them best suited to advanced and sub-ohm vape kits as it can be easily absorbed by the larger coils within these devices without becoming over saturated or drying out.
How many nicotine shots do I need to add?
How many nicotine shots you need depends on the size of the short fill you are adding them to. Short fills leave room for the addition of enough nicotine shots to create a 3 mg/ml nicotine strength. In the case of 50 ml short fills, one nicotine shot is needed, and with 100 ml short fills you will need two 10 ml nicotine shots to create a 3 mg/ml strength.
It is not advised to exceed a 3 mg/ml nicotine strength, as there will not be enough room in the bottle for more nicotine shots and it can dilute the flavour of the e-liquid if more than the recommended amount are added.
If you require a strength less than 3 mg/ml you can add less than a full nicotine shot, for example, adding half of a nicotine shot to a 50 ml short fill will produce around a 1.5 mg/ml nicotine strength.
