Most new vapers will choose a simple e cig as their first device. These are excellent for initially quitting smoking, but many people will find that in time they may want to upgrade their device. One way in which to do this is to move on to a variable wattage device. In this post we will explain what a variable wattage device is and the benefits it can provide, to help you decide if they are right for you.

What Does Variable Wattage Mean?

A variable wattage device allows the user to control the amount of power going to the coil simply by pushing an up or down button. Most often the wattage will increase or decrease by 0.1 or 0.5 increments. A variable wattage e cig will often be advertised as running ‘up to X watts’, meaning this is its maximum output capability. However, it is important to know that it may not always be appropriate to run the e cig at its maximum wattage. Before changing the wattage on the e cig too much, have a look at the coil that you are going to be running on it. The coil should have a recommended wattage range printed on the side of it, for example, 30-45w. This is how many watts the manufacturer recommends running the coil at. If the coil is run at too high of a wattage it can substantially decrease the life of the coil, or even burn it out straight away!

Why Choose Variable Wattage?

A variable wattage device gives you a lot more control and allows you to further personalise your vape. You are able to experiment with more or less power and find your ‘sweet spot’, the wattage that you find the most comfortable and satisfying. Some people also find they enjoy being able to change the power throughout the day, for example, vaping with a lower wattage in the morning and increasing throughout the day. Another benefit to variable wattage is that it can allow you to ease in a new coil. After priming and inserting a fresh coil, some people prefer to ease their coil in by starting it off on a lower wattage than usual and building it up slowly over the next hour or so. This is a way you can increase the life of your coil.
